TN should give up thinking about creating new sand quarries, urges PMK

Chennai: PMK Chairman Anbumani Ramados on Friday urged the state authorities to abandon the idea of constructing 15 new sand quarries.

Taking on Twitter, Anbumani stated: “There is no sand quarry in Tamil Nadu that extracts sand within the permitted ranges. In all sand quarries, sand is extracted above the permitted ranges resulting in Degradation of the environment, reduction of groundwater ranges and seawater intrusion into rivers. Under the conditions of establishing new sand quarries it will show harm to the state and individuals.” While criticizing the transportation, Anbumani stated that there are already more than 25 sand quarries operating and working on the construction of 25 new quarries. The work of changing small quarries, where only ox carts are allowed, to larger quarries, and dump trucks allowed to contain sand, is happening under conditions that require the construction of 15 new sand quarries.

Additional Anbumani stated that there are a number of options for sand but no such options for atmosphere. Anbumani urged “the state authorities to abandon the idea of opening new sand quarries to guard the atmosphere and closing the prevailing sand quarries.”
